Plant and microbial impacts of an invasive species vary across an environmental gradient

چکیده

Invasive plants often successfully occupy large areas encompassing broad environmental gradients in their invaded range, yet how invader dominance and effects on ecological communities vary across the landscape has rarely been explored. Furthermore, while impacts of invasion plant are well studied, it is not understood whether responses above-ground (plant) below-ground (microbial) coupled. Here we test patterns Phragmites australis (common reed) a field survey eight sites situated salinity gradient, ranging from freshwater to saline marsh, Southeast Louisiana. At each site, surveyed composition used metabarcoding methods assess soil fungal bacterial plots within dense stand, transition zone ~50:50 Phragmites:native plants, native-only areas. We hypothesized that Phragmites' abundance impact above- would gradient be found weak evidence varied gradient: stem densities increased slightly with salinity, litter accumulation more fresh compared brackish. stronger microbial salinity. strongly reduced native density greater reductions Plant species richness displayed consistent decreases gradient; however, sharply only brackish sites. effect community became as increased. Plants microbes exhibited coupled magnitude compositional shifts brought by Phragmites, but were Synthesis. Overall, variability particularly impacts, suggests may difficult generalize single-site or single-ecosystem studies. However, showed some Phragmites; thus understanding gives insight into occurring below-ground.

development and implementation of an optimized control strategy for induction machine in an electric vehicle

in the area of automotive engineering there is a tendency to more electrification of power train. in this work control of an induction machine for the application of electric vehicle is investigated. through the changing operating point of the machine, adapting the rotor magnetization current seems to be useful to increase the machines efficiency. in the literature there are many approaches wh...

Plant and microbial responses to nitrogen and phosphorus addition across an elevational gradient in subarctic tundra.

Temperature and nutrients are major limiting factors in subarctic tundra. Experimental manipulation of nutrient availability along elevational gradients (and thus temperature) can improve our understanding of ecological responses to climate change. However, no study to date has explored impacts of nutrient addition along a tundra elevational gradient, or across contrasting vegetation types alon...

Impacts of insect herbivory on cactus population dynamics: experimental demography across an environmental gradient

Understanding the role of consumers in plant population dynamics is important, both conceptually and practically. Yet, while the negative effects of herbivory on plant performance have been well documented, we know much less about how individuallevel damage translates to impacts on population growth or whether spatial variation in herbivory affects patterns of plant distribution. We studied the...

The effects of an invasive seaweed on native communities vary along a gradient of land-based human impacts.

The difficulty in teasing apart the effects of biological invasions from those of other anthropogenic perturbations has hampered our understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the global biodiversity crisis. The recent elaboration of global-scale maps of cumulative human impacts provides a unique opportunity to assess how the impact of invaders varies among areas exposed to different anthropo...
